Growing up with German shepherds as a young child and owning my first set of German Shepherds at the age of 16. Breeding and Training German shepherds has always been my passion.
It was difficult when my parents and I relocated to Texas from North Carolina, and I had to give them up for adoption. We were moving to a place that did not allow dogs on the premises at the time.
Later I met my wife who too had a strong love for the breed and had a male German Shepherd dog named Blade. (talk about the total package!) His loyalty was unconditional, and after a tragedy took him far too early from our family, we struggled with that loss and it took a long time to heal.
Now surrounded by the animals we love, together with our three children we have a greater understanding of the breed and temperament of these amazing creatures.
Here at vanBuren Shepherds we believe in producing the highest quality German Shepherd dogs from European blood lines East/West German, DDR, Czech and Belgium Working Lines & West German Show Lines. Working with a German shepherd dog is a passion. Seeing the end result of all the hard work and labor that you put into raising and training a dog is a great reward. The bonding that must take place between both the handler and the dog is unbreakable if done correctly.
We believe in using well balanced positive training coupled with just the correct level of discipline. Many times we have seen that special bond between handler and dog destroyed because of a lack of self control. The handler allows himself to become frustrated with the dog when he does not respond fast enough to the training method.
A dog handler who becomes frustrated easily, lashes out, and corrects a dog too harshly, -should not be a dog handler. — At least not yet!
At vanBuren Shepherds we have made it mandatory for all dog handlers and trainers to go through a character education course before they ever begin to work with one of our dogs. This way the individual realizes that not only do they need to control their emotions, but how to control them. So that a training session with their dog doesn’t turn into a dog fight. The course that we use is The Peaceful Solution Character Education Program, INC.
